The NRA greets its members with 'Good morning, shooters.'

I don't know about you but I am kind of steering clear of all the response to the latest shooting in the US. But this article comes well-recommended. I skimmed it but it's from Overland Journal, so it would be pretty good.

One thing I will say about the shooting: what the hell were so many babies and young kids doing at a midnight showing of a movie? What the hell were so many babies and young kids doing at an M-Rated movie. Sure, the babies won't take any of it in, maybe they were asleep but wouldn't it be loud and noisy and crashy and scary? As it turns out, it really was.

Just a warning: I wouldn't be surprised if you end up with people landing here accusing you of blaming the victims and so forth with statements like that.

I believe that under the American ratings system the movie is only PG-13. Apparently they are way lenient on violence over there but way harsh on sex. This doco is worth checking out. (Strangely, when I heard about this, I had just come home from watching the movie myself) My first thought when I came out of the cinema was "Wow, they really held back in places; they must have really wanted that lower rating in The States."

Hey Alex, not sure my blog has that much reach although I do know it gets good returns often. As I put the labels on it I realised that might happen, so it was a considered move. Not wanting to be provocative but surely I'm not the only one who has had that thought?

Are you talking about the actual movie? The batman one?

It's strange because often M+ movies here are R in the states, so in that case it would seem it goes the other way.

It only takes one person to get outraged and send a link to all their mates. But if you've taken it into consideration, all good.

Yeah, the Batman movie. A cinema geek friend (who works at the cinema) took me along on opening day. First time I'd been to the pictures in ages.

In the doco I linked to they talk about how (under the US system) you can have a movie where hundreds of people get gunned down that gets rated PG-13, but anything mildly sex related will land you with R or higher.

From memory, the Batman movie has no strong language, no sex (only a pre-sex scene), no drug related stuff, and the the violence is noticeably tame. There is some shooting and killing, but little (maybe no) blood. There's a part of the film where we see "the worst prison on earth" which is parallelled by Gotham's descent into lawless anarchy; but in both cases it all seems very underwhelming (hurts the film, actually). There is one rather vague allusion to rape.

It was pretty much writ large that they wanted young people in the theatres for this.
